Rooted in Service: 31st Union Gives Back at Huddart Park

At 31st Union, giving back isn’t just something we do, it’s an important part of our DNA. We believe that building games goes hand-in-hand with building a better world, and that starts with caring for the communities and environments around us.

On May 21, this commitment came to life as a team of 31U volunteers rolled up their sleeves for an afternoon of hands-on service at Huddart Park in San Mateo County. Partnering with the San Mateo County Parks Department, our mission was clear: tackle the invasive French Broom plant that’s quietly threatening California’s native ecosystems.

French Broom might look charming, but it’s a fast-spreading shrub with a not-so-pretty impact. By overtaking native plants and increasing wildfire risk, it throws entire ecosystems off balance. Armed with weed wrenches, gloves, and a healthy dose of determination, our team spent the afternoon clearing the dense underbrush from the park’s scenic Redwood Shelter area.

Leading the charge was Parks Volunteer Coordinator Stuart Smith, who gave us a crash course in ecological stewardship. His insights helped connect the dots between the physical work and its long-term environmental impact. It was a powerful reminder that even a few hours of collective effort can ripple outward in meaningful ways.

But the day wasn’t just about conservation; it was also about connection. Working side-by-side in nature gave us the chance to step away from our desks, mix up our usual routine, and engage with one another in a new setting. We laughed, learned, and left feeling energized.

This event was a clear expression of our studio values in action: trust, collaboration, and care for the world around us. We’re proud of what we accomplished together and look forward to more opportunities to give back, both locally and globally. (Spoiler: Our next project may or may not involve naming some very large mammals. Stay tuned!)
