What inspired you to go into video game development?
I’ve loved video games ever since the original NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). When I was young, I loved the challenge and discovery of new worlds. As I got older and further along in my writing career, video games became a refuge. A place where I could clear my mind and escape from the stressors of everyday life. As a writer, there’s nothing more fulfilling than creating new worlds or characters that others can experience. So, I thought why not combine the two things that bring me so much joy. Fortunately, I’ve gotten the opportunity to do that here at 31st Union.
What surprised you about video game development?
What surprised me the most was how much talent is required to make a game. Coming from comic books, I’m used to working with a small team of four to five people. Here at 31st Union, there are over a hundred game developers with various skillsets and perspectives coming together to achieve a singular goal: make the best game possible. I’ve never been part of such a large team of creatives and I’m getting the opportunity to learn so much from so many different people.
Are there any current trends in gaming that you find exciting or inspiring?
I think we’re seeing more narrative at the forefront of games, even in genres that aren’t typically known for story. Of course, that makes the writer in me both excited by the possibilities and inspired by all the great stories appearing in the space. I think it’s a great time to be a gamer who loves narrative.
What is unique about 31st Union compared to the broader industry?
I don’t have a lot of experience with the video game industry, but I can say that everyone at 31st Union has been incredibly supportive and welcoming. In the time that I’ve been here, I’ve made some great friends and become a better teammate. I really value all the people I’ve met and lessons I’ve learned so far.
Which of our Studio Values most resonates with you? Please explain.
Throughout my career, I’ve been in situations where I didn’t feel welcome. That’s never a fun experience to go through. That’s why “Welcome All” speaks to me the most. It means a lot to be part of a team where I can be myself, voice my opinion, and hear perspectives different from my own.
Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know about you.
Before I pursued writing as a career I worked as a DJ, bartender, and even an insurance salesman. Ultimately, none of those professions were for me, but I’m thankful for the experiences because they helped shape me into the person I am today. The journey is just as important as the destination.
